"Red folder" training for students

Dear Students,

Have you ever noticed that a friend seems down but didn’t know how to help?

Or maybe you’ve felt overwhelmed yourself and wished someone recognized it?

At Nazarbayev University, we believe that a strong and caring community starts with awareness. That’s why the Health and Well-being Department invites you to join the Red Folder Training — a practical, interactive session designed to help you support yourself and those around you.

What is the Red Folder?

The Red Folder is a rapid response guide that helps to identify signs of a student’s psychological or emotional crisis and respond appropriately to provide timely and professional support. Originally developed in U.S. universities like UCLA, USC, and Northwestern, this training is now used worldwide to equip students with life-saving awareness and confidence.

Why is it important for you?

Mental health challenges are common — and often invisible. Whether you're supporting a friend, a classmate, or taking care of your own wellbeing, knowing how to recognize signs, respond calmly, and connect with the right support can make a huge difference.

By taking this training, you will learn:

  • How to notice signs that someone might be in emotional distress
  • What to say (and what not to say) in difficult conversations
  • How to assess when it’s time to involve professionals
  • Who to contact at NU for immediate support

Training Dates:
July 9 (Kazakh/Russian) at 15:00
July 11 (English) at 15:00
Duration: 2–2.5 hours
